What is a Cylinder Liner? Technical Definition and Its Function Inside the Engine
The cylinder liner is a metal component in internal combustion engines that forms the cylinder in which the piston moves and protects the engine block against wear. It increases the durability of the engine block against the high temperature, pressure, and friction forces generated in the combustion chamber.
Cylinder liners prevent compression losses by maintaining piston–ring compatibility, ensure the stability of the oil film, and contribute to the efficient operation of the engine. Engine life is directly related to the material quality and surface processing characteristics of the cylinder liner.
